Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.

Year 5

The past two weeks have been packed with exciting and engaging learning experiences in Year 5! The children have been busy exploring, creating, and discovering new things!

In English, Year 5 embarked on an exciting walk through our very own school forest, setting the perfect atmosphere for their spooky narrative writing. As they wandered through the trees and underbrush, they gathered inspiration for describing eerie and mysterious settings. This experience has helped them build the foundation for their upcoming spooky stories. We can’t wait to see what their imaginations come up with!

In Maths, we have been building on prior learning about the area and perimeter of shapes. We have been applying our knowledge to calculate the dimensions of various polygons and even solving problems involving missing numbers. Their problem-solving skills are really developing!

In Science, Year 5 had a blast experimenting with a carousel of activities to separate different mixtures. The children enjoyed seeing science come to life through practical experiments and gaining hands-on experience. They also explored everyday reversible and irreversible changes. Look out for these changes in your kitchens at home!

During PE, Year 5 worked hard on developing team-building skills. Through a variety of fun activities, they improved their communication, cooperation, and problem-solving abilities, all while having lots of fun together!

In History, the students delved into the beginnings of democracy in Ancient Greece. They learned about the early foundations of governance, drawing comparisons to our own democratic system today. It’s been wonderful to see their analytical skills develop through discussion and debate.

Meanwhile, in D&T, Year 5 have begun to make their felt products by firstly, creating paper templates and then adorning their pieces with appliqued and embroidered felt decorations.

With so much fantastic learning taking place, we are incredibly proud of our Year 5 students. Thank you for your continued support!

Year 6

The past two weeks in Year 6 have been packed with exciting learning experiences.

In Maths, we have revisited our understanding of perimeter and area, engaging in hands-on investigations using string, lolly sticks, and grids. These practical activities have helped us analyze, compare, and calculate different measurements with confidence. As we move forward, we are now applying this knowledge to explore the area of triangles and trapeziums—challenging yet rewarding work!

Our Reading lessons have been equally engaging as we approach the end of Kensuke’s Kingdom. The children have been honing their inference skills, diving deep into Kensuke’s thoughts, feelings, and actions. They have particularly enjoyed acting as detectives, finding evidence in the text to support their ideas and interpretations. It’s been wonderful to see their analytical skills develop through discussion and debate.

In English, we have taken a brief detour from Kensuke’s Kingdom to integrate our learning with Science (Electricity). The children have started writing informal instructional texts on how to create a simple intruder alarm using circuitry. Parents and siblings, consider yourselves warned—these budding engineers might be setting up alarms to protect their bedrooms!

Our RE and History lessons have provided fascinating insights into different cultures and beliefs. We have been studying religious festivals, with a special focus on Holi, which was a vibrant highlight of our learning. The children loved exploring the significance of this colourful festival and how it is celebrated around the world. In History, we have been delving into the beliefs of the Ancient Mayans—did you know they believed in 13 levels of heaven? Their complex and intriguing civilization has sparked lots of curiosity and discussion in class.

With so much fantastic learning taking place, and our final mock SATs completed, we are incredibly proud of our Year 6 students. Thank you for your continued support!
