Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.
Year 5
As we approach the half-term break, it’s a great time to reflect on the busy few weeks in Year 5.
In Art, we’ve wrapped up our final weaving projects. It’s been wonderful to see the creativity and skill students have put into these pieces. The results are now at home, ready for display. It’s always rewarding to see how their techniques have improved and the personal touch they’ve added to each project.
In Humanities, we’ve been discussing global supply chains and whether they have positive or negative impacts. The students have really engaged with this topic, considering the wider implications of what it means for people, economies, and the environment. It has sparked some lively debates and critical thinking about the world around them.
Maths has shifted focus onto decimals. The students have begun to analyse them more closely, and we’ve worked on applying their knowledge to solve problems in context. It’s great to see their growing confidence with numbers, especially when tackling real-world examples.
In English, we’ve dived into creative writing with a narrative inspired by The Boy at the Back of the Class. The students have started crafting a reunion story between Ahmet and Alexa, exploring themes of friendship, identity, and change. There have been some imaginative twists in their stories, and we can’t wait to see the finished pieces.
As we head into half term, we would like to remind all the children about the screenwriting competition; the final date for entering submissions is on the 28th February. We wish all of our Year 5 families a restful break. See you soon, ready to tackle the second half of the term!

Year 6
Over the past two weeks, Year 6 have been busy learning and exploring a range of exciting topics. We can’t quite believe we are halfway through the year already.
In science, we’ve been diving into the world of shadows to round off our topic on light. The children have been conducting experiments to understand how shadows change depending on the position of light sources and objects. We learnt about how the shape of shadows can alter throughout the day. It’s been fantastic to see their curiosity grow as they observe the effects of light and dark!
To end the half term, we wrapped up our printing project with many incredible final pieces inspired by Hokusai. The children showed excellent creativity as well as perseverance during this topic. It wasn’t easy!
In maths, we’ve been learning all about converting measurements. Year 6 have been mastering how to convert between different units and how to choose the most appropriate unit of measure. The children have enjoyed solving problems and applying this new skill to real-life situations.
In French, we enjoyed role-playing visiting a French restaurant and ordering food (in French). Mrs Darling was very impressed with us!
Lastly, we’ve continued reading Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. After Michael’s dramatic accident, we’ve delved deeper into his journey on the island and have written descriptive pieces about his new surroundings. We are looking forward to finding out what Michael and Stella get up to and how they come to survive their ordeal after the half term break.
Over half term, we have set homework as normal. We encourage this to be spread throughout the week and not left until the last weekend. For maths, we have set an old SATs paper online which we recommend you work through together.
We wish everyone a lovely half term break and look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday 24th February.
