Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.

Year 5

The last two weeks in Year 5 have been filled with exciting and engaging learning opportunities. Last week, the children had the fantastic opportunity to experience the Space Dome, where they were able to immerse themselves in the wonders of space. Inside the dome, they learned about the planets, stars, and the vastness of our universe. It was an exciting experience that sparked curiosity and further enthusiasm for our space unit. This week in science, we delved deeper into the fascinating world of stars. The children researched different types of stars and their lifecycle, exploring concepts such as constellations, the sun’s role and the concept of light years. They’ve shown great interest in understanding the celestial objects that we can see in the night sky. In design technology, Year 5 used lollipop sticks to design and create different structures. The children learned about different ways to strengthen structures, experimenting with various techniques to improve the stability of their designs. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to practice problem-solving and critical thinking. In maths, we have been focusing on fractions. The children began by learning about equivalent fractions and how to convert between mixed and improper fractions. They have now moved on to comparing fractions with different denominators. In English, we’ve started studying The Piano, focusing on narrative writing with a flashback. We look forward to more exciting learning in the coming weeks!

Year 6

The Y6 children have had another fantastic fortnight showing tremendous focus and effort in all aspects of their learning.

In English, the children have been exploring the infamous tale of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. With the aim to retell the introduction of the story, we delved into the tragic characters, foreboding settings and tangle of plots. We familiarised ourselves with the vocabulary and storyline through role play and a variety of readings.

Although this being their first introduction to the subject, the children grasped ratio and algebra with great confidence and fluency. By utilising their knowledge of equivalent fractions, the children were confident in applying these skills efficiently: identifying ratios from pictures and word problems as well as simplifying ratios and proving their accuracy.

Despite the cold, Kyanite and half of Garnet have really enjoyed their week of Bikability. They have learnt new skills about staying safe on the road and have built their self-confidence, which we hope will allow them new independence for the future. The rest of the year group are looking forward to taking part next week!

In between Bikability sessions, we have been exploring the specific areas in the UK that the Luftwaffe targeted and the reasons why. We discussed the introduction of Radar and how, despite the RAF’s smaller military base, they were able to utilise their strengths and overcome the invasion. In science, we compared our own theories of early life to those from 2000 years ago in Ancient Greece. From what seemed at first as ‘silly’ and preposterous suggestions, we realised from their observable evidence, we could understand their hypotheses.

We have been proud of how the children have juggled their studies in class (and on a bike) and with Jet class introducing Bikability next week, we hope this continues.
