Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.
Year 5
This week, Year 5 have fully immersed themselves into the wonderful, imaginative world of Shaun Tan’s ‘The Lost Thing’ in our English lessons, where they created their own totally unique and creative lost things out of recycled materials. We were very impressed by their creativity and resourcefulness! We have been discussing the deeper meaning of the book, which explores finding your people and the themes of community and belonging. Last week, the children proudly published their descriptive settings based on What We'll Build by Oliver Jeffers.
We have enjoyed using place value counters in maths to order numbers up to 1,000,000 and rounding numbers to the nearest multiple of 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000. The children have continued to demonstrate their ability to develop their maths skills with confidence and a growth mindset.
In science, the children created their own experiments by coming up with their ideas for dependent and independent variables, having created their own ‘O- wing’. In art, we practised our drawing skills to effectively create 3D coloured drawings of fruit, using various shading techniques and shadows to draw from observation.
The reading records are looking really positive, please continue to read 5 times a week with your child and leave a valuable comment. It’s been another brilliant week, and we’re really looking forward to our geography field work next week!

Year 6
It has been another busy and enthralling fortnight in Year 6 these past two weeks as the children have now fully settled into the new year. In maths, last week was all about exploring common factors and common multiples. The children engaged in discussions about how understanding these concepts will help them with fractions in their future learning. They also took on the challenge of identifying prime numbers up to 100, which sparked lively conversations about their unique properties. This week, the focus shifted to developing fluency in multiplication and division. Students practised various written methods alongside alternative strategies, allowing them to find the most efficient approaches to solve problems.
Moving to English, the students published their first major writing piece of Year 6: a setting description of their own picturesque land. They employed descriptive writing techniques to create vivid imagery, showcasing their creativity and attention to detail. This week, however, their attention turned to a different genre of writing as they began planning and writing their autobiographies. They loved sharing anecdotes from their early years. It has been heartwarming to hear them recount their personal stories and milestones, reflecting on their childhood.
In science, the exploration of living things and their adaptations to the environment has continued. The children have been focusing on the work of Carl Linnaeus, delving into how plants and animals are classified and how their adaptations help them thrive in their habitats. We look forward to sharing some of our exciting findings with you all at our class assemblies!
Our art and geography lessons have provided creative outlets for our students. In art, they experimented with layering a variety of materials to create stunning collages, allowing their artistic expression to flourish. In geography, the children were introduced to the lives of indigenous Amazonians, learning about their cultures and the importance of environmental conservation.
As always, we encourage you to discuss these topics with your children at home. Their enthusiasm for learning is contagious, and we are thrilled to see their growth as they tackle new challenges. Thank you for your continued support!
