Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.
Year 5
It has been an exciting and enriching week in Year 5 this week. In mathematics, we focused on exploring efficient mental strategies to multiply and divide large numbers, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving. Can you do 86 x 99 in your head? Geography lessons were equally engaging as students discovered the source counties of the UK's main exports and analysed geographical factors influencing their production. The use of atlases and map diagrams provided a holistic understanding of trade dynamics in the UK. In science, our young scientists set up a captivating investigation to test the heat conductivity of different material spoons, observing how quickly they melted butter. We predicted metal would be the best conductor as the molecules may move more freely - we were right! Meanwhile, in PE, students utilized weights, boxing gloves, and skipping ropes to enhance their strength and power. They loved putting their physical strength to the test! In English, the students showcased their creativity and critical thinking skills by finalising and publishing their escape plans as instructional texts. They supported each other through buddy-checking their work, giving each other positive feedback and advising on how to enhance their buddy’s piece of writing.

Year 6
What a busy week it has been! We are really proud of all the children for their efforts with some mock SATs papers. They showed real resilience and perseverance and did us and themselves really proud. We will be sending their test papers home before half-term for you to take a look at with your child. Over the last two weeks in reading, we have studied the fable of Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters. We discussed key themes and answered questions by supporting our answers with evidence from the text. Our favourite lesson had to be our fast-paced vocabulary relay lesson. In groups, we used our skimming and scanning skills to highlight words in a text (which was stuck around the room) as well as our dictionary skills to discover their meaning. It was a close race between table groups! In science, we moved on from reflection to refraction. We used a glass of water and a piece of paper to create ‘optical illusions’ - ask your child to show you what they learnt. In French, we have been learning about daily routines and have begun being able to verbalise these. Our art this week involved printing contrasting patterns on polystyrene tiles. We have worked very meticulously and have enjoyed exploring a range of different printing techniques. Next week, we are celebrating International Day on Friday. We will be asking the children to teach their peers about their own country. We hope this will help develop the children’s curiosity and celebrate our school diversity.
