KS1 News

Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 1 & 2 this week.

Year 1

We have continued to explore Beegu, using our senses to think of exciting adjectives to describe her appearance and how she is feeling. Building on our sentence writing skills to include both adjectives and conjunctions ‘and’ or ‘because’ to stretch our sentences and make them more interesting. This week we had an unusual surprise! Beegu’s parents wrote to us asking for help to find Beegu, we have been writing letters to her parents giving details of where she is and how she is feeling. We have continued to focus on using capital letters, finger spaces, adjectives and full stops into our sentences, but we have also learnt the structure of how to write a letter. In maths, last week we learned how to complete number tracks by counting backwards, identify 1 less than a given number and compare groups by matching.  This week we have used straws and cubes to help us identify which symbol to use when recording which numbers are greater than, less than and equal to.  The crocodile always wants to eat the bigger number, so he opens his mouth wide to gobble it up!

The children were very excited to participate in their first Geography Field Day. They used maps to explore the local area around Vineyard school looking for the geographical features. On returning to school they drew their own maps then worked as a team to create a 3D version of their maps.

We are continuing to explore Yayoi Kusama in our art lessons, where we have been introduced to a new method called stippling. We created pictures using dots of the same or different sizes and colours.

Year 2

Year 2 had a great time during our whole school field day. The children walked down to Richmond Green in search of different types of buildings, and were able to confidently make suggestions as to what a range of buildings were used for. When we returned to school, the children collated their findings, added their tally charts to a poster and created their own map of all of the buildings they saw on the green. The teachers were very impressed with the children’s sensible behaviour and high quality outcomes when back at school. Well done Year 2!

We have been reading the books, ‘Traction Man is Here’ and ‘Traction Man Meets Turbo Dog’ by Mini Grey during our English lessons. The children have explored interesting and exciting adjectives to write character descriptions and created their own Traction Hero, who we have taken on adventures around the school. This is leading towards the children writing a diary entry. For our diary entry, we have renamed several locations in school to fit our superhero narrative and planned an eventful journey. For example, we changed the name of our classroom to ‘The Land of Brave Detectives’ then the shared area became ‘The Forest of Missing Jumpers’. These locations will feature in their diaries as they write about Traction Man’s search for his missing companion, ‘Scrubbing Brush’.

In maths, we have been using manipulatives to explore counting in 2s, 5s, and 10s. On Thursday, we started to count in 3s. This was something the children found quite tricky so we will definitely revisit it in the future. We haven’t introduced times-tables yet but see if your child can use a hundred square or number line to count from 0 to 30 in 3s.

Continuing our work on ‘How Animals Grow’, we have explored the life cycles of horses, recognising that some animals give birth to live young. The children discovered that a baby horse is called a foal and that adult horses are called mares or stallions. We have one last life cycle to study - next week we will look into the life cycle of butterflies! With a huge fondness for insects, there is a lot of excitement anticipating this…

Finally, in Art, the children have been designing and creating their prints, which have been inspired by our artist Orla Kiely. Our themes have focused on nature and repeating patterns.  This week, they worked with polystyrene to prepare their printing template.
