KS1 News

Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 1 & 2 this week.

Year 1

In maths this week, we have explored numbers from 50 to 100 and used a numberline and 100 square to help us. On Monday, we went outside with chalks and drew numberlines on the playground. We carefully labelled what the start, middle and end numbers were and chose whether to count in 1s, 2s, 5s or even 10s! We continued to find one more and one less and had to think carefully when we added one more but the tens changed.

In English, we read our new book Iggy Peck Architect! We loved hearing about the characters dream to become and architect and used lots of suffixes, conjunctions and even contractions to enhance our sentences.

In history, we learnt all about the Wright brothers and the first flight of an aircraft. We found it very interesting to compare the first plane to modern planes and notices the different things that have changed. We thought about why the Wright brothers were significant and why they are important. We also found it very exciting that we had seen a plane similar to the Wright brothers at Brooklands! It was great to see a real life example of our history learning.

Year 2

Year 2 had an incredibly fun and engaging week of learning, filled with a variety of enriching activities. The highlight of our week was writing a diary entry from the perspective of Bear, the main character from "Bear and the Piano". The children delved into Bear’s feelings, exploring his dilemma of missing the forest yet loving his new city life. Should he stay in New York and play sold-out concerts or should he return to the forest to reunite with his friends? Over three days, they worked diligently to perfect their final pieces, and on Monday, we will publish our work, focusing on our best handwriting. In Design and Technology, the children demonstrated creativity and purpose by designing finger puppets aimed at raising awareness for World Environment Day. Their thoughtful designs reflect their understanding of textiles and their enthusiasm towards the natural world. Thursday brought extra excitement with a fantastic PE lesson led by Coach Josh, followed by a special music session. An amazing parent helper visited our classes and taught the children to sing "Count on Me" by Bruno Mars, which they thoroughly enjoyed. We are also looking forward to our upcoming trip to Hampton Court on Tuesday, where we will enrich our understanding of Tudor Richmond. On the 1st July, we are also planning to take our history lesson to Richmond Green so that we can see Richmond Palace.
