KS1 News

Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 1 & 2 this week.

Year 1

We have had another lovely week in year 1. We have especially been enjoying taking our learning outside into the spring sunshine!

In maths, we have been busy applying our knowledge of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s and doubles to begin to think about sharing and halving. On Tuesday, we had fun finding the hidden numicon pieces in the learning garden. We worked in pairs to solve the number sentence by working backwards to find the correct answer.

In English, we have started our new book ‘Meerkat Mail’. We have been writing factual sentences all about the Kalahari desert where Sunny the meerkat lives. We enjoyed publishing our sentences into informative posters.

In geography, we expanded our knowledge of earth by locating and comparing the North Pole and South Pole. We used our current knowledge of the Northern and Southern hemispheres to discuss where each pole was near. We enjoyed learning about which animals we might find in the 2 poles. We thought it was very interesting that penguins and polar bears never meet because they live in opposite poles!

In computing, we are using Scratch to practice our programming skills and we used the different directions of arrows to move the sprite across the screen.

 Year 2

We are very excited to be planting our bulbs and seeds this week so that we can compare how they grow. This is a great way to develop our scientific skills of observing, measuring and recording data. The children have also had great fun working on animations on Scratch, changing avatars and backgrounds and creating their own little short stories.  Traditional stories are still a theme in English.  Did you know that after meeting Jack, the Giant comes across another boy called Jim who recognises that he is not just  ‘wrinkled, wonky, cruel and bitter’ but ‘frustrated and lonely’. The writing this week has enabled everyone to explore using different conjunctions further to extend sentences and create a more interesting read.  In maths, we have now mastered what one half, one quarter and one third looks like and what this means when dealing with numbers and money.  Money was also a discussion in geography as we thought about trade and how this benefits Sao Paulo.  You could check your coffee to see if it has come across the Atlantic from Brazil.  The end of the week meant scooter training.  Thank you to everyone who brought and shared a scooter and well done to the children for their sensible behaviour.
