KS1 News

Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 1 & 2 this week.

Year 1

This week in Year 1 we have been adding numbers to 20 by using our number bond knowledge to 10. We have used Numicons, diennes and tens frames to support in this learning. In English we continued to use our newly learnt knowledge of conjunctions in our letter writing to Bird from the story The Yeti and The Bird. The conjunctions we have been using are ‘and, but, because’. We have also been asking Bird lots of questions and practising our use of question marks. In art, we have been exploring Henri Matisse’s artwork and furthered our learning by creating an image using collage. In geography, we have been learning all about weather and seasons, which came in the perfect time with Storm Isha.  In science, we went on a plant hunt to familiarise ourselves with the common plants in England. Hopefully when spring comes the children will be able to recognise most of the plants in bloom. We have also identified and labelled the different parts of a tree. We have been learning to log on and off on Chromebooks.

Year 2

Year 2 have worked so hard this week! In geography, we identify the different types of housing in our local area. The children drew diagrams of detached, semi-detached, terrace houses, bungalows and apartments. We then discussed which types of housing are most common in our local area. Being a super popular place to live, and land being so valuable, we concluded that there aren’t many bungalows but lots of apartment blocks. In science, we tested whether materials are waterproof or absorbent. Some materials were easier than others to classify. We found that cardboard was waterproof at first but eventually absorbed water.  The children therefore discussed whether there are different degrees of being absorbent. In English this week, we have written guides on how to look after dragons. We considered what dragons like to eat and play, and where they like to hide. The children then wrote a guide in their best handwriting so that they could help keep their grown ups safe if a dragon ever decides to visit Richmond.  Finally, the year 2 classes have been practising for their class assembly. They will be performing a special version of ‘The Dragon Machine’ and lots of their writing has contributed to the script.
