Read on to find out what we have been up to in Reception this week.

The last two weeks in Reception have been all about the welcome arrival of spring. We observed ‘signs of spring’ that we could spot around us and talked about the fact that this is a time when lots of baby animals are born. We have learned the Easter story, discussed why this is an important festival for Christians, and have been busy making some Easter decorations and cards. Whilst learning about Easter, we reviewed the other festivals we have learned about so far in Reception (Diwali, Christmas, Lunar New Year, and Carnival) and made comparisons (What’s the same? What’s different?).

The children have continued to love dressing up as superheroes with our masks and capes, both inside and outside, and it has sparked lots of brilliant imaginative games during free learning. We have read lots of Supertato books together, and for our writing, we made a wanted poster for Evil Pea. The children had to write a description of the villain, say what he was wanted for, and come up with a reward. To continue our learning about real-life superheroes, we had a very exciting visit from the fire brigade and got to ask lots of questions.

In maths lessons, we have been learning about doubles and odd and even numbers. We learned that we can spot a double when the two parts of the whole are the same.

We used the sentence stem: ___ is made of ___ and ___; ___ and ___ make ___.
(e.g. 6 is made of 3 and 3; 3 and 3 make 6).

We have also used the Numberblocks and Numicon pieces to help us see the difference between odd and even numbers. In an even number, each block can be ‘paired,’ resulting in the formation of the flat top of the Numberblocks. For an odd number, one of the blocks doesn’t have a pair or ‘special friend.’

This week, as well as reviewing these number concepts, we have moved on to measurement and have been learning about length and height. Maybe you could try measuring some objects from home using blocks or Lego pieces—how many blocks long are some of your toys?

We wish you all a happy break and look forward to seeing you in the summer term!

Key messages:

  • A reminder that children are not allowed to play on the climbing frame or use the school equipment before and after school, including siblings.

  • Please continue to give us donations of clean recycling to add to our junk modeling, as we use it throughout the year—small boxes, toilet rolls, etc. However, we cannot accept anything that once contained nuts, eggs, or fish.

  • Please return any spare socks, pants, or trousers that have been sent home previously for your child. We have no spare socks, pants, or trousers/leggings left. Alternatively, any donations are welcome!

  • If you would like to be a ‘mystery reader,’ please fill in this link here.

  • Lots of children are bringing in toys from home; we do not advise this, as they get lost or broken, and children get very upset. If children take them out of their bags, they will be confiscated until the end of the day.

  • Over the Easter holidays, there is a Supertato event happening at Kew Gardens if you’re looking for a fun outing.

  • Advance warning: Bug Ball – 2nd May. Children are to come dressed as an insect/minibeast.

  • Minor rewording for smoother sentence flow.
