Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 1 & 2 this week.
Year 1
Happy last week of the half-term! We have filled in this week with lots of learning, including some lovely trips to the Richmond Museum where we stepped back in time and experienced what life was like as a Victorian child. In particular, what doing the laundry, as a Victorian child, would have looked like.
In English, we worked very hard writing up our explanation texts, making sure to add in only facts and writing them up in chronological order, using our time conjunctions. We finished off our book The Tiny Seed, by publishing our explanation texts and reading them to our audience - the Reception classes.
We have been practising to become ‘efficient mathematicians’ by using lots of different skills to add and subtract in maths. We used our knowledge of number bonds within 10, doubles and near doubles to help us to add. We have used lots of manipulatives as well, such as number lines, Numicons, tens and ones and diennes to help consolidate our learning to subtract numbers within 20.
In science, we showcased our knowledge of everyday materials by grouping and sorting the materials based on their properties. We have also been introduced to what a ‘fair experiment’ looks like by measuring if some objects sink or float based on their properties and materials. We are experts at collaging as we have finished off our self-portraits and evaluated our work. We can now recognise weather patterns and compare different weather and seasons in different parts of the United Kingdom - Richmond and the Hebrides. In computing we practised our typing skills on the Chromebooks and iPads.

Year 2
This week in Year 2 has been bursting with energy and creativity! We kicked off the week by diving into the magical world of The Magic Paintbrush in English. The children were captivated by the story, and we turned the adventure into a fantastic class audiobook, with everyone getting involved to bring the tale to life. In maths, we tackled some tricky two-step problems using money. It was a fun challenge that had everyone thinking hard, and the kids loved solving the word problems. In science, the children became Arctic explorers as they learned about food chains, discovering how different animals and plants play important roles in the cycle of life in such extreme conditions. Why not ask your children about the role of plankton in a polar food chain? Meanwhile, in geography, the class turned into passionate debaters, discussing whether Richmond Park is mostly made up of human or physical features – the arguments were thought-provoking, and the children loved hearing each other’s perspectives and reasoning their own ideas. In art, we continued to explore the vibrant and bold style of Keith Haring, and the children used oil pastels to create their own colourful masterpieces, really bringing his unique style to life in their own way. But the true highlight of the week was when the entire class came together for their class performances. The energy, excitement, and pride the children showed during their performances for their families were absolutely incredible – it was a moment to remember! From storytelling to math challenges, Arctic explorations to fiery debates, and colourful art to unforgettable performances, it’s been one action-packed term that’s made us all so proud of what the children have accomplished! Bring on next half term!
