UKS2 News

Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.

Year 5

We’ve had a productive and exciting few weeks in Year 5 as we continue to explore new topics and prepare for upcoming projects. In our art lessons, students are gearing up for their final weaving projects. They’ve been experimenting with various techniques and materials to create beautiful, intricate patterns. Their creativity has been flowing and we can’t wait to see the finished pieces!

In science, our class has been diving into electricity, with a focus on testing electrical conductivity. Students have enjoyed using circuits to investigate which materials allow electricity to flow and which ones do not. They’ve been making observations and drawing conclusions, strengthening their understanding of how electricity works.

In maths, we’ve been working on multiplying fractions. Students have been learning how to multiply fractions with both whole numbers and other fractions and have tackled real-world problems that involve fractions. It’s been a great opportunity for them to apply their skills in practical ways. We encourage continued practice at home to reinforce these concepts.

Finally, in PSHE, we’ve been exploring future careers and thinking about the skills required for different jobs. Students have been discussing their interests and aspirations, learning about various roles and how their strengths can help them succeed in the future. It’s been a wonderful opportunity for them to start thinking about their personal goals.

We’re excited to see all the great things the students will achieve in the coming weeks. With their enthusiasm and creativity in full swing, we’re sure they’ll continue to impress and surprise us all! It’s going to be an action-packed, fun-filled few weeks ahead, and we can’t wait to see what they come up with next!

Year 6

In science, this week our focus was on refraction, the bending of light as it passes through different materials. We carried out a hands-on investigation and looked at how refraction alters the way we see things. Ask your child to show you - all you need is a glass of water and a small piece of paper. Next week, we are going to be looking at shadows and how we see colour.

The focus for our maths has been on calculating percentages of amounts. We looked at various methods, which can be used to solve questions and discussed their efficiencies. We also applied our knowledge to real life problems. It was a valuable opportunity for the children to see how percentages are used in everyday situations, such as working out sale prices or understanding tips. All teachers were very impressed with their efforts and perseverance as it can be a challenging skill to master. Next week, we are revisiting the topic of measure. We will be revisiting our skills of multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000 to support us with conversions.

In English, we’ve started reading the exciting adventure story, Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. The classes are already hooked on the opening chapters, where we met the main character, Michael, and found out about his sailing adventure around the world. We’re looking forward to exploring the themes of survival, friendship and courage as the story progresses. Our first piece of writing will be an informal letter. The children will get into the mindset of Michael and write home to their gran to tell her about all the amazing things they have seen and experienced on their travels.

Friday saw us celebrate International Day! Firstly, thank you so much to all parents who came in and shared information about their culture. It was a brilliant opportunity for us to celebrate the diversity of our year group and to learn more from each other. The children left school buzzing about their afternoon and it really brought the day to life.
