Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.
Year 5
Last week, we visited the Poppy Factory in Richmond. The trip was educational and moving, with the children learning about the history of the poppy and its connection to World War I. They also enjoyed creating poppies from paper and silk, which was a lovely creative activity. In history lessons, we’ve been exploring the legacy of the Poppy Factory and learning about the use of Richmond Park during World War I. The children have shown great interest in this topic and have made meaningful connections to the history we’re studying. In English, the children have been working hard on writing their narratives based on the short film The Piano, with a focus on incorporating a flashback. We’ve been particularly impressed by their use of show, not tell techniques to describe characters and settings. The creativity and imagination they have demonstrated in their writing has been fantastic, and we can’t wait to see their final pieces. We’ve continued our topic of fractions in maths, focusing on adding and subtracting fractions within a whole and as mixed numbers. The children have shown great progress and confidence in tackling these concepts. It’s been wonderful to see them applying their understanding to solve problems and deepen their mathematical knowledge. In science, we’ve been learning about time zones and the fascinating ways they work around the world. The children have also enjoyed making their own sundials, linking the concept of time to hands-on learning. It was a fun and engaging way to understand how time is measured throughout the day. Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to the final weeks of term!

Year 6
Across the Year 6 corridor, this term has been filled with exciting learning experiences, creativity, and plenty of hands-on activities!
In English, we stepped into the world of Shakespeare, exploring Macbeth’s tragic tale. This week, we imagined ourselves as Lady Macbeth and wrote heartfelt letters to Macbeth, offering advice, warnings and reflections about his fateful choices.
In maths, we tackled algebra with enthusiasm, solving puzzles, finding missing values and discovering how to represent varying equations. By the end of the term, we were confident mathematicians, ready to crack any algebraic challenge and use our skills to explore real life problems.
Science brought a sweet twist as we explored genes and inheritance using marshmallows! Through this tasty activity, we created our very own imaginary animal called a Reebop. We learned how traits are passed down from parents to offspring and how there can be such variation between brothers and sisters of the same family.
One of the most memorable moments in history this term was our class trip to an RAF bunker to learn about the Battle of Britain. Stepping into history, we explored life during wartime, the bravery of the RAF pilots, how the battles were coordinated through the control room and the significance of this turning point in World War II. It was a fascinating and unforgettable experience!
We also took time to celebrate the festive season by watching the KS1 Nativity stories. It was heartwarming to see the younger children perform with so much enthusiasm and joy, bringing the Christmas story to life with songs, costumes and smiles.
Year 6 would like to wish everyone a Happy Christmas and a well deserved rest over the holidays with family and friends. Thank you for your support this term. We look forward to seeing the children back again in the new year!
