Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.
Year 5
The past two weeks have been full of exciting learning experiences for our Year 5 students. In English, the children have created a breadth of imaginative and impressive poetry in varying forms, including; haikus, limericks and utilising rhyming schemes. We have thoroughly enjoyed following the emotive, narrative poems of Sam in the book ‘Cloudbusting’ by Malorie Blackman. In maths, the focus has been on identifying factor pairs, common factors and common multiples.
In art, the children have been working hard on their stunning mixed-media perspective drawings to represent autumnal compositions of pumpkins and squash. The students have honed their skills and used a variety of tools such as graded pencils, charcoal, coloured chalks and oil pastels. Their final pieces are amazing!
Our science lessons have been equally hands-on, with the children experimenting with the placement of levers on their own catapult creations, using lolly sticks. The students were then able to form their own tables to record their results, which they then evaluated.
In PSHE this week, we set ourselves goals, which we could achieve by the end of next half term. We discussed making them SMART goals, which are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time based.

Year 6
The past two weeks have been full of exciting learning experiences for our Year 6 students. They’ve had their first experience with SATs preparation, tackling past papers from 2022 in maths (arithmetic and reasoning), reading, SPaG and spelling. This has been a great opportunity for the children to familiarise themselves with the format and get a sense of what to expect in the future.
In maths, the focus has been on adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators and mixed numbers. The children have used fun and engaging representations, including pizzas and bar models, to help them grasp these tricky concepts. How much pizza would you have left if you started with three and a half and ate one and five-eighths?
Meanwhile, in English, the class has taken on the challenge of turning Lewis Carroll’s Jabberwocky into a descriptive narrative. They’ve had a blast using Carroll’s famous nonsense words like “vorpal,” “galumphing,” and “beamish” to bring their writing to life.
In art, the children have been working hard on their stunning mixed-media collages, depicting beautiful landscape scenes. They’ve skilfully used a variety of materials such as paint, paper, bubble wrap, and magazine cut-outs, and the final pieces are truly amazing!
Our science lessons have been equally hands-on, with the children observing the growth of mould on bread in different environments as part of our microorganisms study. We’ll be eagerly awaiting the results after the half-term break to see how different conditions affect the growth of the fungus!
We are delighted to announce that Mrs Chambers gave birth to her second child, Emmy Rose Chambers, on Friday morning. Both mum and baby are doing well and we can’t wait to meet little Emmy soon!
