Read on to find out what we have been up to in Years 5 & 6 this week.

Year 5

Greetings from another week at The Vineyard School! We're excited to share the highlights from another engaging week of learning with you. Our students were truly inspired by the story of Philippe Petit's courageous tightrope walk between the Twin Towers, sparking discussions about bravery and determination. We will continue our study for the next two weeks and aim to create an online web article which the children will type onto the laptops.

In maths, our young mathematicians continued to explore the concepts of reflecting and translating coordinates, honing their skills in geometric transformations with great enthusiasm and determination. The homework this week mirrors our learning and if your child requires any more support with this topic, please let your class teacher know and they will provide some more resources.

Meanwhile, in science, our curious scientists delved into the intriguing differences between the life cycles of birds and amphibians. Through hands-on activities and lively discussions, they gained valuable insights into the fascinating world of adaptation and survival.

In the realm of art, our students embarked on their final project, channeling the spirit of Frida Kahlo to create vibrant self-portraits. It's been heartwarming to witness their creativity blossom as they express themselves through color and form.

Year 6

SATs week finally arrived and what a brilliant job all the children did. They concentrated hard, stayed calm and showed off everything that they’ve learnt. We are all very proud of them. It feels good to have SATs behind us now and we can focus on all the exciting things coming up for the rest of term - still lots to do!

On Monday afternoon, we all spent the afternoon doing art. Continuing with our painting topic, we experimented with various different-sized brushes to create contrasting lines and brushstrokes. We also tried drawing an abstract face using a continuous line, inspired by the work of Pablo Picasso and Favianna Rodriguez.

On Tuesday, Year 6 musicians were preparing to create their own opera-inspired piece of music by recreating and interpreting sounds from existing graphic scores and librettos. Next week they are going begin creating their own scores and sounds. We can’t wait to hear what they come up with.

The children have had some extra downtime in between tests and we have been getting outside for fresh air and to enjoy the sunshine as much as possible. With a partner, the children did some maths revision where they had to find questions stuck on fences and trees, solve them and come back to check their answers with an adult before setting off to hunt for the next one. In PE, they showed off their throwing and long distance running to Miss Foster and on Wednesday afternoon we played some ‘Ultimate Tag’ on the field as a whole year group.

The week ended with us introducing our production (auditions will take place on Monday) and a really fun celebratory afternoon in Terrace Gardens. Thank you to all the parents who volunteered their time to make this possible for us to do.
