Year 5

The year group has enjoyed taking part in some fun events this week as we have been enjoying a week dedicated to reading, based around World Book Day. Year 5 gatecrashed the author talk from charismatic speaker, Gareth P. Jones, who was invited to speak to Years 3 and 4. He entertained a hall full of children with his interactive anecdotes, singing, ventriloquism, accompanying himself on the piano and ukelele. The year group enjoyed their own author talk from Lucy Ann Unwin the day after. 

In history this week, the children deepened their knowledge of Ancient Greece by finding out how men and women led their lives. We considered how this differed markedly from life today. The children reconstructed imagery of Grecian urns and speculated about how to interpret this evidence about how women lived at the time. 

Science was hands-on this week, as children worked in groups to separate a variety of substances using resources such as filter paper, sieves, magnets and heat (for evaporation). This formed part of their ‘changing state of materials’ topic and consolidated their understanding of what constitutes a fair test, as well as how to write up a science experiment. 

Teamwork continued apace in indoor PE this week, with some fast-moving and enjoyable team games, such as hula hoop football (which is surprisingly tiring) and plank activities challenge.

Year 6

Year 6 have been working hard as usual this week. All classes have been writing their non-chronological reports about Japan. Everyone has created a unique non-chronological report based on areas that they have independently researched and found interesting (sports, culture, food etc..). We cannot wait to see their finished visions next week in their extended writing books! In maths we have started our new topic: area, volume and perimeter. The children have been using their previous knowledge of shape to help find the area of triangles. Next week will see the children put all their previous knowledge to practise as they complete their final mock SATs (the results/test will be sent home before the Easter break). The children have been learning more and more about the Kingdom of Benin. This week saw the children use sources to compare how the Oba’s lived compared to the ordinary people. On Thursday the children were treated to our guest author Lucy Ann Unwin. Her book, ‘The Octopus, Dadu and Me’, was introduced to the children. All the children were thoroughly engaged and inspired by Lucy and we are looking forward to hearing more about the book. Friday saw the dress as their favour character from a book. The children were also read to by another teacher at the school, reconnecting with some familiar faces. New children in the year group: Harry Potter, Mad Hatter and Mary Poppins thoroughly impressed us and we hope to see them again on Monday!
