UKS2 News
Come and find out what UKS2 have been up to!
Year 5
It was lovely to see so many of you at family meetings this week and feedback the positivity of this year.
This week, we have been preparing for the class assemblies that are happening next week (you are definitely in for a treat)! Starlite’s assembly is on Tuesday, Moonstone’s assembly is on Wednesday and Peridot’s assembly is on Thursday. All the assemblies will start at 9am.
A big focus of our mathematics this week and for the next few weeks is fractions. For the past few lessons we have been identifying equivalent fractions and using multiplication to help us achieve this.
On Wednesday, the Year 5 pupils were given the freedom to write a story based on a picture. A fantastic source for these creative writing pictures can be found at: https://www.onceuponapicture.co.uk/ It is a fantastic exercise for children to do and has been proven to be extremely beneficial for their learning.
Our Viking enthusiasm has continued as we looked at how the Vikings once held land in England as they founded Danelaw in central and northern England. We are very excited to be making Viking shields at the end of term, which will be sent home on the last day of Christmas term.
If it is possible, we would love for you to come down to the PTA Christmas Crafting Market that is happening next Saturday. It is an event being organised by our wonderful PTA and should put the children in a festive mood!

Year 6
It’s been lovely to chat to so many families this week to share all the progress the children have already made in Year 6 and discuss targets and goals going forwards. Thank you to everyone who has attended the meetings.
We’ve been continuing to build on our fraction skills this week in maths and have been multiplying and dividing fractions by fractions and by integers. We are leaving Macbeth behind now and turning our attention to a totally different type of writing in English lessons: autobiographies. The children have been delving into their pasts to think of funny stories and memorable events to share from when they were little. We are thinking carefully about what information to include with the aim of both informing and entertaining the reader. Children got into groups to start designing the bird house they will build on our D&T day in a couple of weeks time. They needed to choose a British bird to design their product for, thinking about what specific requirements it has. For example, does this bird prefer an open- fronted or more enclosed house? What diameter entry hole would be the most appropriate for it? We also had some good discussions around how to make sure the structure was waterproof and durable but also an eco-friendly design. We can’t wait to get constructing them soon. Next week, The Vineyard will be celebrating Anti-bullying week. This year’s national theme is ‘Make a Noise about Bullying’ and Year 6 children will all take part in a workshop on Monday delivered by a theatre company called ‘Openview Education.’
