Year 1

We have had a lovely week in Year 1.

In English, we have enjoyed reading our class book The Little Red and the Very Hungry Lion. Before reading the story we made predictions about what we thought would happen in the book... Year 1 predicted the lion would eat Little Red! We then challenged ourselves to write sentences using adjectives to describe the different characters. In maths, we have been learning to add. We have explored systematic number bonds to 10 and used stories to solve addition problems using the symbol plus. In History this week we have continued to build on our understanding of chronology and explored what life was like for children during The Victorian Era. We learnt that during the Victorian Era not all children went to school! We then enjoyed writing diary entries as if we were Victorian children. We discussed what was similar and what was different about a day in our life and a day in a Victorian child’s life. In Science, we have started to learn about the features of animals. Year 1 were very excited to draw an animal and identify the different features of their chosen animal.

Year 2

What a great week to focus on celebrating who we are (PSHE)!  Mary Seacole is such a interesting person to focus on in history’s Significant People topic.  We agreed that her caring nature, curiosity and courageousness encapsulates the Vineyard community.  Different types of frogs have been explored in English.  Fanatical About Frogs has taught us so many facts about these fascinating amphibians.  Did you know that frogs have sticky feet to help them climb and that poison dart frogs like to wrestle?  We are working through features of factual texts including paragraphs and subheadings and how adverbs, common and proper nouns are used to give more detail.  Maths is continuing with addition and subtraction building on how number bonds help us add to and subtract from a two digit number. The new topic in science is electricity which has inspired children to think about the objects around them and how the could categorise them. We cannot run through the week without congratulating the children for being so fantastic despite the disruption and give a big thanks to the parents for the generous and positive support.  All so much appreciated.
